More Info

Perhaps more than any other U.S. Supreme Court ruling in modern times, the Shelley v. Kraemer decision literally and figuratively changed the face of our nation. This 1948 case forever ended the practice of "restrictive real estate covenants" that dictated where people could—and could not—live based on issues of race, color, creed, and national origin. Join us for a viewing of this 14-minute documentary film that explains and describes the events that led up to this milestone ruling and the actions of the brave and dedicated St. Louisans who banded together to help bring it about.

Afterward, Jeffrey Copeland (author of Olivia's Story: The Conspiracy of Heroes Behind Shelley v. Kraemer) will give a brief talk about the role St. Louis played in this historic change. In addition, some of those involved in the case and their relatives will speak about their experiences.

This film will be featured in the upcoming exhibit #1 in Civil Rights: The African American Freedom Struggle in St. Louis.
